Cold, windy and dry today, moderating the rest of the week

A cool, windy and dry day is on tap for today, which will set the stage for a cool start to the week.

MONDAY

The Houston region is under a “red flag” warning today through 7 p.m., which means very dry air will blow in from the northwest, creating ideal conditions for outdoor fires. The relative humidity should fall in the teens this afternoon as winds gust into the upper 20s. Highs should reach around 60 degrees.

This map shows conditions a little more than one-half mile up in the atmosphere later today. This nicely shows the tight gradient between high and low pressure, drawing a cold northerly flow into Texas. (Weather Bell)

The winds should subside tonight.

TUESDAY

Clear skies overnight will allow temperatures to tall into the mid- to upper-30s during the overnight hours, and a light freeze is possible for areas well to the north of Houston. Highs on Tuesday should climb into the low 60s.

WEDNESDAY

A warming trend begins with lows in the low 40s and highs in the mid 60s under fully sunny skies.

THURSDAY and FRIDAY

Sunny and calm weather continues under high pressure, with lows around 50 and highs in the mid-70s.

THE WEEKEND

It looks like a front will cool us off a little bit this weekend, perhaps arriving on Saturday, but there’s not much clarity in the models. In any case, I’d expect highs in the 60s for the weekend, with rain chances remaining low. Subject to change!

RAIN?

It’s been a dry start to the year, with most of the region only seeing about 2 inches of rain during the first 5.5 weeks. We’re not going to remedy that this week, and really the next even moderate chance of rain doesn’t come until next Monday. I’ll keep on the lookout for when we might expect more significant precipitation.

  1. Eric –

The weather was fantastic this weekend and the next few days look to be the same.

Great job! Keep this up and maybe we can give you a raise.

  2. Hi Eric,

Would this winter be considered atypical of an El Nino winter in Houston? It’s just seemed warmer than normal overall; we’ve had what, maybe one or two nights of a borderline freeze. I hate hot weather (but Houston is home) and really hate when we miss out on a good winter. Any explanation for what’s made this winter seem like a La Nina winter without the one off Arctic blast?

    Thanks…
