Two more days of excessive October heat for Houston

Monday saw record, and near-record heat across the Houston area. Hobby Airport set a record with a high temperature of 92 degrees, and College Station tied a record by reaching the same temperatures. We need to get through a couple more days of anomalous October heat before finally seeing some relief.

Today

High pressure remains in place over Texas, and so conditions on Tuesday will be a lot like those on Monday—which is to say hot, mostly sunny, humid and rain-free.

Wednesday

The high pressure system that has driven temperatures up in recent days should finally move off to the east. This will probably “limit” high temperatures to the upper 80s, and will allow for some cloud cover and likely some isolated showers across Houston.

Thursday

An honest to goodness cold front will blow into Houston. Can I get an amen? As for timing, right now it appears the front will reach northern parts of the metro area sometime during the morning hours, and be off the coast sometime during the afternoon or evening. Forecast models are not consistent with the amount of rain, but given the limited moisture in some levels of the atmosphere I’m not confident we’ll see a broad line of showers with this front. In any case, I expect the rain to move off the coast with the front.

In the wake of the front we could see some breezy conditions, especially along the coast, with winds perhaps gusting to 15 to 20mph.

Friday through Sunday

Well, Mother Nature is late will fall this year. Buy by goodness the timing is right in terms of the weekend. We should see highs around 80 degrees, plus or minus a degree, and for Friday, Saturday and Sunday mornings lows for most parts of the region will be in the 50s. Saturday should be the coolest morning, with lows near 50 possible for areas north of the city of Houston.

Next week

The blast of cooler air won’t last, but I’m pretty confident we’re not heading back to 90 degrees, either. Looks for highs in the mid-80s next week, with low temperatures rebounding back to around 70 degrees.

  1. You said, “Can I get an Amen?”

Here it is, “A-a-a-men, A-a-a- men, “A-a-men, Amen, Amen.” (You know the tune)

  2. I know it’s going to cool down in two days, but did they really need to turn the heat on in our building today? Doofuses!
