Have yourself a weekend, Houston

Is anyone ready for a cold front? It’s not here yet, but it remains on the way. And golly I am ready.

Today

Some showers have developed along the coast this morning from Brazosport to Galveston, and this rain should remain largely confined to the coastal counties, possibly bringing 1 inch or more to some areas.

Meanwhile, a broken line of storms just ahead of the cold front is moving steadily to the southeast, toward Houston. It should reach northern areas of the region late this morning, and likely will move through Houston this afternoon and off the coast this evening. Expect a chance of storms with the front’s passage, but nothing too threatening. Conditions will be breezy in the front’s wake, especially close to the coast.

The Texas Tech model shows a line of broken storms nearing the coast at 5pm CT today.

Friday through Sunday

Have yourself a weekend! With cooler and drier air moving in Thursday night we should see cooler mornings in the 50s (40s are possible well north and west of Houston) through Sunday, and daytime highs in the upper 70s to lower 80s with lots of sunshine. Not much more to say other than get outside and enjoy.

Monday through Wednesday

Winds will swing back out of the south by later on Sunday, which will set us onto a gradual warming pattern by Monday, and we should see highs in the middle 80s to start the next work week, with lows in the mid-60s.

After Wednesday

As long-time residents will know, fall doesn’t truly “stick” in the month of October, as we can still see high pressure systems retain some heat. I don’t think we’re going to see 90 degrees again in 2016 (I won’t entirely rule it out), but the remainder of next week does look fairly warm, with highs in the upper 80s possible by next weekend. It doesn’t look like our next cool front will arrive until near the end of the month, perhaps a day or two before Halloween. We always have to wait until late November or even December before we can expect a cooler pattern to stick for awhile, and even then its no guarantee, as saw in 2015.

  1. Eric…I’m the one in my household that faces the north wind with the passage of a cold front and and decides whether or not to announce the real arrival of fall…you have reminded me that I may have to wait until November/December…dang it!! But, I’ll tolerate temperatures south of 90…
