Other regional weather sites

One of the most frequent questions we hear at Space City Weather goes something like this:

“I’m moving to [insert destination] and I’m trying to find a weather blog there just like Space City Weather. Can you help?”

We live to serve.

The short answer is that while there really is nothing quite like SCW (and believe me, I’ve looked), there are many weather blogs and newsletters that focus on local and regional weather. Strangely, they’re not as easy to find as you’d hope. Blame the deteriorating quality of Google’s search and the infamously unreliable results you will get with AI chatbots.

But using a combination of those tools, and asking folks who would know (i.e., Matt and Eric!) I’ve compiled a list of almost 40 blogs and newsletters that focus on local weather. They’re sorted here based on four U.S. geographic regions, and each is labeled with the specific area it covers.

Some notes about criteria and methodology:

Every local weather blog is unique.
  • Weather has become a hot (pun intended!) topic for online news outlets to cover. Once the purview of broadcast media, the growing interest in climate and the popularity of the topic online has inspired newspapers, digital-only pubs and other sites to branch into weather. So if you move to an area, or have an interest in another locale’s climate, checking local media sites is a place to start. But what I’ve listed here are independent, locally focused sources similar to Space City Weather, eschewing mainstream media. The one exception: You’ll find Washington, D.C.’s The Capitol Weather Gang listed in the Northeast group. Considered one of the first local weather blogs, it inspired many others (including this one) so as the OG it deserves a spot even though it’s now owned by The Washington Post.
  • As mentioned, the list comes from some tortured Google searches, quality time conversing with ChatGPT and scouring Substack, which has a lot of weather and climate newsletters (including an outpost of The Eyewall). I’ve been poking away at this topic for almost a year, and when I initially queried for “the best 10 regional, independent weather blogs” in ChatGPT, fully half were not real. ChatGPT even generated fake web addresses that went nowhere. When I came back to it a few weeks ago, the results were much more reliable.
  • I also combed a database of weather and climate blogs and websites maintained by FeedSpot. There are a lot more listings there than you’ll find here. Many I checked were national or global in focus, were clearly run by climate-change deniers, while many more were no longer active. Nevertheless, if you want to dive deeper into the weather/climate blogosphere, it’s quite the rabbit hole.

We consider this a start and not a definitive list. We’ll add to it over time as we find new ones. If you are aware of a quality, independent, locally focused weather blog or newsletter that is updated on a regular basis that you don’t see here, please let me know. We’ve set up a Discourse comment thread that we’ll keep live for a week; you can drop a web address with a brief description in there.

Obviously, we’d rather you stuck around Houston and kept us as your go-to source for area weather. But if you must flee, we’ve got you covered.
