Wow! It’s really cold across the region this morning, with a 21-degree mark at Bush Intercontinental matching Jan. 17, 2014, as that site’s coldest temperature in the last half decade. The entire metro area (except for Galveston Island) is in the teens or 20s this morning, including sub-25s for much of the central Houston area. Wind chills across most of Houston are about 10 to 15 degrees.
It doesn’t look as though we’ll set records for low temperatures today, as that’s 19 degrees for both the Bush IAH and Hobby Airport locations, set in 1970. But this is very cold nonetheless.
Conditions today will understandably be cold, despite the clearing skies. The high temperature today will struggle to reach 40 degrees and a northerly breeze will make things feel cold all day long.

The National Weather Service has already issued another hard freeze warning for most all of the Houston metro area tonight, except for Galveston County, as temperatures should get about as cold. Here’s a look at their forecast temperatures tonight.
Conditions will begin warming up on Sunday, and I still anticipate the region getting into the mid-70s by Wednesday or so.
Thanks for the write up. What factors led to the freeze being so much more severe than anticipated?
It’s a combination of things. One, the clouds broke up last night sooner than expected. The air mass was a bit colder, too. It really didn’t become clear until Friday afternoon or so that it was going to get quite so cold.
Low here (next to Ellington Field) was 25.9 F at just after 8 AM – according to the wireless thermometer in the back yard. Up a degree since then.
First freeze here in a couple of years.
Forgot to mention the media reaction.
FOX26 had a picture of a patch of ice in their parking lot on this morning’s news. WOW!
WE WILL REBUILD.
NEVER FORGET.
Best catch phrase/slogan of the year thus far. Will need to develop momentum to catch up with the catch of all time (time for Katy to evacuate),
I hope this kills off some bugs..
Woke up to a frozen water hose and no water coming from the faucets for the first time ever this morning! I’m surprised that there wasn’t more screaming and hollering online about the freeze warning, I never even thought to check your site. I’ll be leaving a drip on for the next few days, that’s for sure. As always, thanks for the great coverage.
