It’s a warm morning across the region, with lows generally in the mid- to upper-60s across the region. This is more than 20 degrees above normal for January, and this near-record warmth is going to be more or less what we get through Sunday.
Today and Thursday
We’ll continue to see brisk southerly and southeasterly winds, which will bring very warm and moist air into the region. Highs should reach as high as 80 degrees across parts of Houston, and record high temperatures especially today (81 degrees at Bush IAH, 80 degrees Hobby, 75 degrees Galveston) are within reach. Skies will range from partly to mostly cloudy. Lows may not fall below 70 degrees for some areas between downtown Houston and the coast, and fog may become an issue during the early morning hours.
Friday and Saturday
After a cold front stalls across north Texas on Friday, so this won’t modify our weather’s region much. However winds should die down a little bit, and as moisture continues to accumulate in the atmosphere from the onshore flow we’re going to see some chances for scattered, light rain—but I would expect anything too heavy. Highs will be in the mid-70s for most of Houston, with lows in the mid-60s.

Sunday
The forecast for Sunday, and the Houston Marathon, remains more or less the same. Temperatures will start off in the mid-60s, and with high dewpoints, the humidity level will be high.
By around noon temperatures should be in the low 70s under mostly cloudy skies. Although some light rain is possible Sunday morning, the good news is that the threat of thunderstorms—due to diverging winds in the upper atmosphere—will probably be delayed until Sunday evening or later.
Monday and Tuesday
Healthy rain chances will probably begin Sunday night through Tuesday as temperatures begin to moderate a little bit on Martin Luther King Day, with highs around 70 degrees, and lows starting to drop into the 50s by Monday night. Right now, as a weak front approaches and moves through on Sunday night, I’d anticipate that most of the region could see between 1 and 3 inches of rain from Sunday evening through Tuesday, before a stronger cold front finally sweeps through later on Tuesday to dry things off, and cool us down, at least for a few days.

Hi Eric, thanks for all you & Matt provide for those of us who love to plan ahead!
Not sure if this is possible to forsee but can I pack up my long, warm coat and boots for a while? Or at least until I travel somewhere cold?
It’s beginning to feel that way isn’t it? But no, the region can still see very cold weather through February so I’d hold on for now.
Any idea when we are going to get our next arctic blast? It was so fun!
Are you running the Chevron Houston Marathon again this year? Looks like potential Bataan death march with those temps combined with 80%+ relative humidity.
Yes. I’ve been warning of the impending death by humidity for about 10 days now…
Wonderful. I went on my last, very light, run yesterday afternoon and realized how much a little bit of warmth and humidity changes things. Looks like my goal will change from “Boston” to “Finish.” Good luck everyone!
Sorry for the rotten Marathon weather. Best wished for a successful run!
