Good morning. I hope everyone had a great weekend. This morning we’ll look ahead to spring-like weather and I’l also discuss freeze possibilities for the rest of this winter.
TODAY
There will be a slight chance of light to moderate rain this morning and into the early afternoon hours as a cold front approaches and moves through the region. I’m not expecting significant accumulations of rain and any showers should be fairly brief. Highs today will be in the mid-70s and winds could be gusty this afternoon as the front moves through.
TUESDAY-THURSDAY
We’ll see three splendid and sunny spring-time days highs in the 70s and lows in the 50s. The air will be generally dry so it won’t feel particularly humid out. Enjoy the outdoors!
FRIDAY-SATURDAY
Conditions are even a bit warmer, with highs near 80 degrees, and lows around 60, under mostly sunny skies.
SUNDAY-MONDAY
The next cold front will likely arrive on Sunday or Monday, and will bring our next decent chance of rain. This probably won’t be a super-strong front but it could drive lows back into the 40s by Tuesday morning or so.
LAST FREEZE?
Has Houston had its last freeze? To be honest, much of central and southern Houston haven’t recorded a freeze at all this winter. Houston has officially recorded just a single freeze, 32° on Jan. 11 at Bush Intercontinental Airport).
Given the lack of freezes this winter, and relatively mild conditions expected for most of the rest of February, I feel confident in predicting freeze-free weather for the rest of the winter and spring for central and southern Houston. I’d also rate the chances of a freeze for the northern part of the metro area, including The Woodlands, at less than 50 percent. But I’m not ready to give the all clear because these northern areas have been known to freeze as late as early April.
Uh oh, we did lots of pruning this weekend here in The Woodlands, I hope we are in the clear. Thanks, Eric
Is it too late to put out winter rye in the Conroe area? New house on acreage with no grass!
I’m sorry, I honestly don’t know the answer. My guess would be yes.
But did it freeze enough? Someone told me we’ll have tons more mosquitoes after this warm winter.
Freezing knocks out activity at the time of the cold weather, but it has little effect on populations during the spring and summer.
I didn’t know that. Huh. Okay, in that case I retract my comment except for their being the size of horses because it always seems like they are.
I don’t think we even had a freeze this winter around Ellington. I saw it was 35F one morning, that was it.
Am I imagining this, or did this winter seem particularly warmer than others? I hope that’s not going to become the new norm.
We have had a mild winter, but not exceptionally warm. I am going to address this in a more comprehensive post soon.
Don’t think we’ve had a freeze, at all, in my neighborhood. Unfortunately, I predict mosquitoes the size of horses by late April.
Wasn’t this supposed to be a wetter-and-colder-than-normal winter? Seems like it ended up awfully dry and milder.
Yes it was, and it wasn’t. I’m going to address this soon.
Any update on freeze predictions? Looks like there is something in the forecast.
