Warm, dry conditions for Houston to start the weekend, rain returns next week

It’s another morning with 100 percent, or near 100 percent humidity across the area, and lows generally in the mid-70s across the area.

TODAY

There were strong storms during the overnight hours in the Dallas-Fort Worth metroplex, but as the associated system has sagged to the southeast it has weakened. This should leave the Houston area with partly to mostly sunny skies for the first half of today. A slow-moving, weak front will then push into the area later this afternoon. There’s some chance of thunderstorms with this system, but at this point there just doesn’t seem to be enough lift with the front to really drive widespread showers. Most areas probably won’t see rain as the front slowly moves through Houston this afternoon, evening and tonight.

FRIDAY

A few scattered showers may linger Friday morning in the wake of the front, but with a slight northerly wind we should see partly sunny skies by the middle of the day. Any sunshine should warm us up pretty quickly, with highs in the upper 80s likely. However with the slightly drier air Friday evening should feel cooler as the Sun begins to set.

SATURDAY

After starting out around 70 degrees, we’re going to see a warm day Saturday as highs climb into the mid- to upper 80s under mostly sunny skies. Humidity will be a little lower than normal.

SUNDAY through TUESDAY

After two weeks of mostly dry weather we should return to a more wet pattern by Sunday night or Monday. As usual there remains some uncertainty due to timing and rainfall amounts, but by Sunday night we’ll see increasing moisture levels, and an upper-level disturbance will bring enough atmospheric instability to generate some rain showers. I would not be surprised to see the region pick up 1 to 3 inches of rain through Wednesday or so of next week. At this point I’m not too concerned about flooding, and many lawns and trees across the area could use the rain.

Anyway, it’s something we’ll be watching.

  1. You know, Eric and Matt, I just want to say thanks for this blog. I really appreciate ya’ll putting together and synthesizing information from sources like NOAA, and other paid for weather analytical tools like WeatherBell (and more) to bear on the sometimes dull, sometimes interesting Houston weather.

    • If you want dull, we’re almost there. June-August is generally dull when high pressure sets in.
