After a muggy mid-week, rains, cooler weather on the way for the weekend

Good morning, and welcome to my daily update on weather in the greater Houston area.

TODAY

Fog across parts of the area will burn off this morning, leading to a partly to mostly cloudy day that should hold temperatures in the upper 70s for most of Houston. Lows tonight will be muggy, with temperatures only falling into the upper 60s.

THURSDAY and FRIDAY

On Thursday a fairly slow moving front will cross into central Texas, and edge its way toward the Houston area. This front has the potential to generate some severe weather, but the threat of damaging winds and tornadoes appears most likely to remain well to the northwest of the Houston metro area.

This map from NOAA’s Storm Prediction Center, above, shows Houston at only a slight risk for thunderstorms and potentially more severe weather.

Houston may see some showers and thunderstorms beginning Thursday night through Friday, but as I have been saying there is a low potential for flooding. I don’t anticipate the region will see more than 0.5 to 2 inches of rain during the entire period of Thursday through Saturday.

Although there's the potential for heavier rains, right now accumulations for most parts of Texas this weekend appear to be manageable, says NOAA. (Weather Bell)

Heavier rains should remain well to the northwest, over areas such as College Station, where 2 to 3 inches of rain may be possible.

SATURDAY

A secondary front will move through the region on Saturday, and this will allow for the potential for light to moderate rainfall, but again I do not expect the kinds of continual downpours we’ve seen. Saturday’s high temperature should remain at about 70 degrees under cloudy and sometimes rainy skies.

SUNDAY

We’ll see clearing conditions with partly to mostly sunny skies later in the day. High temperatures might not reach 70 degrees in the wake of the cool front.

  1. Thanks for the update. I have followed your posts for years. Quick Question: If you have an outdoor event set for this Friday evening that could fairly easily be pushed back a week, would you go ahead and postpone it?

    • I can’t guarantee it won’t be raining next Friday. If you can tolerate light rain I’d consider doing it this Friday evening.

    • Not easily. I’ve been doing it manually, but have forgotten the last couple of times. I’ll try to do better.

      • Thanks! It’s a Wizard of Oz theme party. But no witches are invited, so a little light rain shouldn’t hurt.

  2. Thanks, and glad to have found your new page! Was wondering why you weren’t updating the Chron website any more.

  3. How has all the rain of the last two weeks affected the drought in Texas? After the Thursday drought report cones out, please review the drought situation in Houston and in Texas.
