And just like that, with the transition from April to May, spring as we knew it is gone. Monday morning’s low temperature across most of Houston fell into the upper 50s. On Tuesday morning, the low has only fallen to around 70 degrees. We certainly will see a few more cool fronts this season, but I doubt we’ll see many (or more probably, any) more highs in the 70s or cooler nights in the 50s. I would love to be wrong—but I don’t think I am.
Tuesday
Today will be another partly to perhaps mostly cloudy day, as the onshore flow continues to blow moisture into the Houston region. Due to clouds this afternoon, highs will likely remain in the low 80s, but it’s going to be another warmish night, with lows only falling to around 70 degrees.
Wednesday and Thursday
By the middle of the week, the warm air moving in from the south will have done its work. High temperatures will depend upon the amount of clouds during the afternoon hours, but I think partly sunny skies are the most likely option. Therefore, we can probably expect highs in the 84 to 87 degree range, which will feel quite warm after our mild April. Overnight lows will remain warm, and rain chances quite low (although not zero).
Friday and Saturday
As pressures fall heading into the weekend, and with ample moisture in the atmosphere, we’re going to see some modestly better rain chances. We’re by no means looking at a washout, but the end of the week should bring a couple of mostly cloudy days, with highs in the mid-80s, and intermittent rain showers. For now it doesn’t appear as though the area will get more than a few tenths of an inch of rain—the forecast models seem to be trending drier. Eventually, perhaps on Saturday evening or during the overnight hours, a weak cold front should move through the area.
Sunday and beyond
Following this front, the region should see at least a couple of drier (in terms of humidity) days, with highs in the low 80s, and overnight lows perhaps in the 60s. Sunday, in particular, is shaping up to be quite a nice day, if the front does indeed make it all the way through and off the coast.
Twas a good run this spring; farewell mildest of weather.
“I doubt we’ll see many (or more probably, any) more highs in the 70s or cooler nights in the 50s.” True, but any day that we don’t get 35 inches of rain is a good one. That’s my new perspective….
I agree completely!
Well said.
Come back cool weather, come back!
You are free to shout that to no one in particular, in vain, until October.
Just as bears hibernate in the north during winter, I hibernate in Houston during the summer. Ready for 24/7 air conditioning and avoiding all exposure to outdoors. See ya’ll in the Fall, can’t wait to watch the Astros post season run.
The word you want is “estivate”. 🙂
