Though it won’t feel like it, Christmas weekend is upon us. Some of us may have trouble seeing it though; not due to too much eggnog but probably due to some dense fog. Let’s dive into the details.
Today
A warm front is lifting through today, allowing warmer and more humid air to begin to flood northward. As this happens, we are seeing some fog around this morning. We already have low clouds, drizzle, showers, or steady light rain around also, and that may continue throughout the day.
Even with clouds and showers, we will warm up to the low 70s this afternoon.
Christmas Eve & Day
Fog is likely to be widespread and dense overnight tonight and into Saturday morning, especially south of I-10. If you’re heading out early to beat the last minute shopping rush tomorrow, give yourself a few extra minutes. The fog should evolve to low clouds, maybe some sunny breaks, and a minor shower chance. Tailgating the Texans/Bengals should be anything but savage.
There will be more fog Christmas Eve night and Sunday morning, so hopefully Rudolph’s nose has fog lights for when Santa passes through. Fog clears Christmas morning, and the rest of the day looks mild. High temperatures should approach the upper 70s, and there could be a shower or thunderstorm around. Overall, however, most plans for Christmas Day should be fine.
Next Week
Monday and Tuesday will see a continuation of this warm, humid pattern. With that, we’ll see a chance of showers and perhaps a few thunderstorms as a cold front approaches, but likely fails to get through the area. That means more clouds, fog, and perhaps showers Tuesday into Wednesday, with continued warm temperatures. It does appear a stronger front will attempt a “clean” pass through Southeast Texas by Thursday. We could be talking a brief return to some 30s here again by next Saturday morning.
So for those of you hoping that winter makes a return at some point, remain patient. It appears we will have more chances at legitimate cold again after New Year’s. Eric and I will keep you posted.
Thank you again to all for your continued support, and have a very merry Christmas!

Eric andMatt…”Space City Weather” is a great source of comfort when wanting to understand Mother Nature’s happenings…the no hype is greatly appreciated…thanks…my hope is you all and your families have a pleasant and safe Christmas holiday period and New Year…oooohh, by the way, your 1% chance of NRG stadium roof being open for Saturday evening’s game is waaaay to high…they might as well weld it shut…this from a long time Oilers/Texans no hype season ticket holder…
Agree, Matt definitely overstated the probability. Hah. Hope you have a great Christmas, Milt.
Though I didn’t live in Houston at the time, I’ve been told by locals there was a white Christmas here a few years ago. I guess we’re not going to see that for another 500 years or so.
It was 2004. Just a magical Christmas eve and morning.
Merry Christmas guys!
Thanks, Josh. Same to you and yours!
