Good evening. Matt did a pretty good job of covering our bases this morning, but I just wanted to put out a reminder about the likelihood of a hard freeze for the northern half of the Houston area tonight, and on Saturday night.
So far it’s been an interesting day, with some moderate precipitation falling across the area. Although some inland parts of the region saw a wintry mix, temperatures remained just above freezing for most of the Houston area today, precluding snow, or sleet, from sticking to the ground. However it’s tantalizing to think that had it been a few degrees cooler today much of the city might be under a half of inch of snow. So close. But now the precipitation is moving out of the area so I don’t expect any problems on Houston area roadways tonight.
And a good thing too, with very cold overnight temperatures coming. A hard freeze warning, which means temperatures could fall below 26 degrees, is in effect for most areas north of Interstate 10 in the Houston region:
(Space City Weather is sponsored by Westbury Christian School for this month)
For people living in the hard freeze warning area, care should be taken to protect any pets, plants and exposed pipes. In addition to the hard freeze warning, many areas immediately along the coast will see their first freeze of this winter season, including Galveston Island.
Don’t look for much of a warm up on Saturday morning, as wind chills should be down into the teens for most of the Houston area. If you’re heading out to NRG Stadium, have fun! Temperatures at noon should be around 35 degrees, with wind chills in the 20s. Make sure to bring gloves and a koozie for that boozie. Temperatures will be about the same after the game, so be prepared for a cold walk to the car (don’t worry, it will be even colder for the Raiders fans).
Expect another hard freeze on Saturday night before a warm-up begins Sunday.
Having not had a freeze in this part of town in maybe two years, it will be interesting to see how “cuckoo for Cocoa Puffs” the media goes tonight.
Maybe the Action News Team will deploy county wide to catch video of the first snow flake?
So far, no runs on bread and bottled water at Kroger, I was just there.
Sorry but all this sounds so silly for those of us who grew up where today would be considered a fairly typical, if possibly somewhat warm, winter day.
Eric, what is the likelihood that ERCOT will issue a conservation alert due to the freezing-cold temperatures? Can we look forward to rotating blackouts or big pockets of power outages?
No.
Say What you will, but . . . this sure beats August!
