The National Weather Service posted a sobering graphic this afternoon showing major area reservoirs still under flooding pressure from very heavy rains Sunday night and Monday. The US Army Corps of Engineers also said today that water continues to rise in the Addicks and Barker reservoirs in west Harris County, threatening to add additional waters into surrounding neighborhoods.
For those already affected by flooding, this will come as small comfort, but we’re nearing the end of several days of heavy rain. Already the National Weather Service has lifted a flash flood watch for the Houston metro area. Better days are ahead.
After partly sunny conditions across the metro region Wednesday afternoon it looks like we’re going to have one more bout of potentially heavy rainfall on Thursday before this troublesome upper level low finally moves off to the eastern United States. The setup for Thursday continues to look a lot like Wednesday.
While we can’t rule out some isolated showers tonight, I don’t expect much development. Instead we most likely will see storms develop over north Texas early on Thursday morning, and move toward Houston, likely reaching the metro area sometime around 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. It looks like there should be less moisture available for these storms so I am hopeful most areas will see 1 inch, or less, of rain. But we can’t rule out some isolated areas seeing more.
After these storms pass through we should see clearing skies later on Thursday, with mostly sunny days Friday and Saturday. Some rain chances return on Sunday, but as of right now I am not seeing anything too crazy in terms of rain totals.
Also I should say we ought to enjoy some slightly cooler nights this weekend, as lows fall into the low- to mid-60s for the region, with drier air. We are getting closer to the onset of summer, and a time when more humid nights in the upper 60s and lower 70s will become a permanent fixture. In other words, after all of this rain, please enjoy this weekend.
