Houston to warm up before another front on Thursday

Good morning. For much of the region, temperatures this morning have only dropped to 50 degrees, and the next two nights will be even warmer. However, by Thursday another front will reach the area, bringing sunnier and chilly weather for the weekend. Also, if you’re interested in an update on our app, see the bottom of this post.

Tuesday

Winds are light out of the southeast this morning, but they’ll pick up today as the onshore flow really gets pumping. Expect gusts to reach about 20 mph. This influx of moisture will lead to partly to mostly cloudy skies today, with highs reaching about 70 degrees. Lows tonight will only drop into the upper 50s to 60 degrees, with even warmer conditions right along the coast. Some light rain is possible near the coast late tonight.

Highs Wednesday will be quite warm for Houston. (Weather Bell)

Wednesday

The potential for light, scattered showers will continue on Wednesday morning, with the possible additional development of some fog near the coast. The day itself will be windy, with southerly gusts as high as 25 to 30 mph really amping up moisture levels. Highs on Wednesday will reach the mid-70s for much of the area, and with dewpoints in the 60s you will start to feel some humidity. Skies will be mostly cloudy, with a continue chance of light rain. Low temperatures on Wednesday night will only drop into the upper 60s, with a chance of scattered showers and perhaps a few thunderstorms.

Thursday

This day will start out muggy, ahead of the front. There is a chance of thunderstorms on Thursday morning. However, my sense is that the atmosphere will be capped enough that for most of us there will just be some fairly brief showers before the front reaches our northwest areas during the morning hours, the city around noon, and the coast during the afternoon hours. Highs ahead of the front will be in the 70s, with dewpoints and temperatures dropping after its passage. Skies will clear during the afternoon hours, allowing temperatures to drop into the upper 30s on Thursday night for all areas but the coast.

Friday, Saturday, and Sunday

We’ll see mostly sunny skies on Friday and Saturday in the wake of the front, with highs in the upper 50s for most areas on Friday, and lowers 60s on Saturday, probably. Sunday is a bit warmer, slotting somewhere in the 60s with rising dewpoints. The first half of next week should see highs in the 70s before the likely arrival of the next front.

App Update

We’re starting to work on the next update of our app, which will feature several frequently requested changes, including the addition of more regions in the drop-down menu of cities, a much improved radar, an option for metric units, and more in addition to bug fixes. What I’d like your feedback on is which cities to include for the 7-day forecast and current conditions. The following map shows the current options in the drop-down menu (red) and proposed additions (in purple). If there’s somewhere where we’re missing, please let me know in the comments below. Thank you!

  1. I’d suggest a way to go from the app to the website easily, or at least the ability to add/view comments easily since it’s a bit cumbersome when you view this article in app to add a comment.

  2. Cypress and Kingwood. Also thought there was a problem with app bc couldn’t see comments. Jumped to assume to try website link which is easy to find (top right link “logo”) which worked out fine.

  3. Willowbrook / Vintage Park area. Also, I’m hoping a future update will allow for a larger font size.

  4. Anahuac…most of the local Houston and Beaumont tv stations leave us out due to the fact where in between both..thanks

    • Baytown is good, but even farther east would be great, because Winnie and Beaumont really relied on you during extreme weather events.

    • Please add Liberty, even the tiny town of Hull or Daisetta would be great. TV reports seldom mention them unless there’s a tornado watch. The area is growing fast due to the new Hwy 99 construction near Dayton.

  5. I’d like to cast a vote for League City/Clear Lake area! You guys are the best, thanks for all you do and always finding a way to bring a smile to reading about the weather.

  6. Thanks for adding a northwest location – Tomball! That should cover Cypress fairly accurately as well.

  7. I know it’s closer-in, but I’m going to go ahead and put in a vote for Jersey Village. Cypress as well. Thank you for the app; it’s great!

  8. Please include Jersey Village!! Adding our location at 290 and Beltway 8 would boost coverage that is lacking in this area and would be most appreciated!! Many thanks:)

    • Sorry, just realized the purple dot means it’s already in the works. Thank you so much!!

  9. Could u adjust the app so that it is possible to expand the maps and font on touch screen phones?

  10. Morning! Looks like you have covered a fairly good range. How about adding Hempstead, Dayton and Bay City or Needville? I think, that should complete the ring around the city nicely.

  11. Consider the counties that are apart of the Houston Galveston area Council of Government (HGAC). This includes Harris, Montgomery, Chambers, Fort Bend, Matagorda, Walker, Austin, Waller, Brazoria, Galveston, Liberty, Colorado, Wharton counties. I am specifically interested in seeing Huntsville included. The major news channel include HUntsville as the starting poit for systems moving in from the north. Thanks.

  12. Yes to the Baytown purple dot. Might also suggest Dayton and Anhuac, because these cold fronts seem to affect the east side of metro Houston more than predictions.

  13. Lake Conroe is always colder, stronger wind, more rain and just extra everything compared to off lake areas. So, Lake Conroe would be great! Love your app!

  14. Alvin, please. Or somewhere south of Pearland along 288. We get forgotten quite a bit, and we’re warmer than Houston at times.

  15. My vote: add both League City and Baytown (purple dots) to current app locations. Wonder if other dual career meteorologists in distant counties are considering cloning SpaceCityWeather app concept for their locality. Comments indicate an interest in expansion. Might be wise to go that direction versus you, Matt, and Maria taking on nearly 254 counties, lol.

  16. Please add Livingston. A lot of people head to Livingston for weekend recreation. Similar to Galveston. Would be nice to have good forecasts to plan time on the lake.

  17. The proposed map seems to provide good broad coverage, with Tomball, League City, and Sugar Land perhaps being a little redundant considering nearby locations already in place. Other recommendations should at least stick to locations within the map. Great job!

  18. Not sure what it takes but if it can be used as a widget to replace the yahoo weather app that would be really cool.

    • Their widget is probably awhile off.He mentioned last year takes a lot of bucks. Weawow with Accuweather (stunning weather pics) and weather channel widgets are great in the meantime fyi.

  19. An App fix I’d like to see would be to allow you to zoom in on your maps. Right now, I have to go over to the website to be able to do this on my phone. Many times the temperature numbers are too small to see without being able to enlarge the map.

  20. The images everyday don’t enlarge for my phone. I have a Samsung Galaxy S9+. The images are too small to read anything without enlarging them. My wife has an iPhone and the images always enlarge for her so it seems the programmer is only coding for iPhones and not Android phones. It would be nice if the programmer would code for both types of phones for the mobile app. Thanks.

  21. I see that Sugar Land is one of the proposed 7-day forecast areas. So thank you for that!

    Keep up the great work.

  22. I would love to see inside the loop, either downtown proper, or the western half of inside the loop (West U, Broadacres, Upper Kirby, Rice Military, etc.). That would be awesome!

  23. Would LOVE to see wind forecasting in some form or fashion…..just a briefly line for each day outlining how high winds will be, and what time we should expect them to pick up. For pilots, this is crucial, and the only thing your forecasting is lack. Keep up the good work!

  24. Thanks for your detailed reporting….
We would like to see “Spring” added to your list of purple dots 🙂

  25. APP SUGGESTION: change the name (or add an alias in the programming) so that searching iOS for “space” brings up the app. I never refer to y’all as “SCW” and when I pull down on my home page to search for the app, I start typing “space” and get nothing.

  26. It is often difficult to read maps in the app. There doesn’t seem to be a way of enlarging the maps or opening them in another window.

  27. Why does so much of Houston overlook Cypress? Harris County officials are finally understanding that if the population in the CyFair ISD were a city we would be in the top ten largest cities in the USA. There are 13 cities smaller than Cypress that have NFL teams. Bridgelands alone is another Clear Lake City or bigger. So I would encourage Cypress please.

  28. Enough already! How much work are you guys supposed to do? Your weather reports are great because they were simple, honest, uncluttered…. Thank you for what you do.

    • The app will evolve like all others do. That’s what everyone wants and they are just trying to please the readers. I have multiple ones and only really rely on SCW for the weather synopsis. There are many other ones with hyper local weather, so it matters to me zero if it only says Houston lol.

  29. How about a city or two out to the west a bit. I know some might say this isn’t traditionally “Space City” but we’re still paying attention 😀 I’m thinking something like Sealy, Bellville, Columbus, Hempstead?

  30. Brazosport-area (Freeport, Clute, Lake Jackson and others.) Thank you guys so much for what you do. So helpful.

  31. Love the app. It’s always better than even the TV stations. I would like to see one change. Is there any way that the map function could show more hours in the future, and less in the past. We’ve already experienced the previous four hours, so I’d like to see more predictions for what’s coming up.

  32. I know your travel forecast for last week’s ice around the state was very helpful to me. Maybe if severe weather is expected in major cities, an update like that would be helpful for D/FW, Austin, San Antonio.

  33. I’d suggest doing angleton, that way it is in the middle between lake Jackson and alvin. At least temps will be somewhat the same. We know the weather won’t always be if you have been in Houston area for a while, it can rain across the street and be sunny 500 feet away.

  34. While Cypress isn’t actually an incorporated city, it’s still viewed as much of a city/town as Katy or Tomball. The population of the area us huge, and it needs to be included. I’d suggest centering the forecast on the original town of Cypress Top (near 290 and Fry Rd).

  35. Brenham (Blinn Jr College), College Station, Bellville area and La Grange, Fayetteville, Columbus area.
