Showery Saturday, but sun by Sunday in Houston

We weren’t lying about this week having some stunning weather. Yesterday was about as close to perfect as you can script here in Houston. It’s certainly worth touting to our neighbors in the North, where winter has just not found a way to relent. Here, however, it’s been great. Through the first 19 days of April, we’re averaging 77.2° for a high and about 56.2° for a low. Compare that to the same period last April, when we averaged 81.4 for a high and 61.2° for a low. This month has been cooler and much more comfortable than April 2017. Can we keep the good times rolling? I think so, but it will get at least a little warmer as we go. First, let’s get through Saturday.

Today

We’re starting today with a good deal of clouds on the west side of the area, and more of a mixed sky on the east side. We’ll call today partly sunny, but it may be a case of more clouds than anything. With the clouds, temperatures are held down, and while we’ll call it lower 70s today, I wouldn’t be shocked to see a few places not get out of the middle to upper 60s if clouds hang in all day.

Tonight through Sunday

Clouds continue tonight. A warm front will approach our region from the south. As it does so, we’ll probably see at least a few showers break out or a bit of light rain and drizzle. The best chance for that to happen will be south and west of Houston. Low temperatures won’t go too far tonight and should bottom out in the lower 60s.

No change in the severe weather outlook for Saturday staying on the low end of things. (NOAA/SPC)

On Saturday, expect showers or light rain at times. It’s probably not a total washout, but Saturday’s not going to be a great day. Then, as a disturbance ahead of our next cold front approaches, we’ll see a chance of thunderstorms begin to increase later in the afternoon and evening.

Will we see any severe weather? It’s possible, but as of right now, the Storm Prediction Center has us in a “marginal” risk, level one out of five on their scale. That means that, yes, a few severe thunderstorms are possible, but they are not necessarily likely. The same story holds for flooding. Yes, we could see some heavy rain in some showers or storms, but flooding isn’t a serious concern this weekend. Of our last couple weekend cold fronts, this one looks the least impressive I think. But we’ll keep tabs on it should anything change.

Total rainfall this weekend now looks to be less than a half inch for most of the area. (Weather Bell/NOAA)

After occasional showers or a couple storms Saturday evening, the front will approach overnight and deliver another round of showers or storms while we sleep, probably less impressive than others we’ve seen on the weekend lately.

By Sunday morning, that should be off the coast, and we’ll see clearing commence from northwest to southeast. Sunday afternoon should be a nice one, with sunshine, high temperatures in the mid-70s, a breeze, and low humidity.

Next week

We’re in store for another great week. Look for partly to mostly sunny conditions Monday and Tuesday, with temperatures comfortable in the middle or upper 70s to near 80 degrees. The pattern looks a touch more unsettled later in the week, with perhaps another front in there to sort of reinforce the lower-end humidity we’ve had plenty of this month. But we don’t see any serious fronts or storm risks right now.

  1. Morning Matt – any chance of us being able to view the Lyrid Meteor Shower April 22, 2018?

The fickle Lyrids sometimes produce fireballs and up to 100 meteors an hour.

    • Unfortunately Saturday night looks mostly cloudy in most of the area. I believe it lingers Sunday, so you’ll almost certainly have better luck catching some of it Sunday night.

  2. Becoming my goto site for weather. Need a little more on wind speed and direction. I’m on galveston bay a lot. Thanks

  3. Please keep us updated for next weekend since thousands of Houstonians are riding the BP MS150 and we’re hoping for good weather this year.

    • Yes, please. Really hoping for good weather, and nothing but tail winds en route to Austin.

  4. Wanting to head to an outdoor even in Brazoria this morning. Head home around lunch. Not much on the radar. What say you?

  5. When will Warmer weather finally arrive? We are anxious for our pool to warm up to get ready for summer.

    • THIS! LOL.
I have been very surprised to see so many wish for this trend to continue. Basically rain, cold, wind 5 do days a week for 2 “spring” days. I’m done. Let’s cut grass, BBQ and swim! We have a pool and a Jeep. Ready to strip it down and go play.

      • Yes!!!! I mean, I really hate to complain but this is getting a little ridiculous. My plants are so unhappy and the pool like ice water.
