Hot, but not too humid the rest of this week in Houston

Disappointingly, IAH Airport officially failed to get dewpoints to drop into the 50s yesterday, though Hobby, Ellington Field, Hooks Airport, and Conroe, among others all did for a few hours. Regardless, it was not a bad Tuesday for the middle third of June in Southeast Texas.

Today

We’ll have another shot at fairly comfortable weather today. Showers this morning are pushing offshore of Galveston and Freeport, and the bulk of today should be dry for most of us. An additional pop-up shower is possible near the coast this afternoon. Otherwise, it should be mainly sunny. After failing to hit 90 yesterday, we should be able to manage about that hot today.

Thursday & Friday

Dry air will be reinforced tonight, keeping the offshore winds going for one more day. Mostly sunny skies will greet us Thursday. We have another chance at seeing dewpoints plunge back into the 50s in parts of the area Thursday afternoon. This front will not reinforce any remaining cool air, however. We should easily push past 90 degrees Thursday afternoon, though with the low humidity, it won’t feel much worse than that.

This forecast of NAM model dewpoints around 1 PM Thursday suggests that drier than usual air for June is going to be reinforced for one final day tomorrow. (Weather Bell)

Friday will be our transition day back to summer. Look for the day to start in the lower 70s, and we’ll again reach for the low-90s in the afternoon with sunshine. Humidity will slowly climb on Friday afternoon, and dewpoints should cross back above 70 at some point later in the day, or back into “uncomfortable” territory.

Weekend

As we’ve told you, summer returns this weekend. Look for high humidity, warm nights, hot days, and a small chance of showers each afternoon as the sea breeze rolls inland. We don’t expect any serious storms this weekend, and it’s likely most of us will miss out on rain. Nevertheless, keep the umbrella handy this weekend in case you need to break it out.

Morning lows will bottom out in the upper-70s to near 80 degrees, a little above normal. Daytime highs should be in the low-90s, not too far off normal.

You’ll also notice a bit of a breeze this weekend as that onshore flow cranks up. Expect some gusty winds over the water and along the beach, with slightly breezy conditions inland.

Next week

One thing I don’t see next week is a lot of change right now. We will have to see how a couple disturbances in the jet stream track to see if better rain chances stay to our north or occasionally drop into our area. Right now, I wouldn’t worry too much about rain as it relates to plans for most of next week, but we’ll update you tomorrow and Friday. Temps look hot, with 90s persisting during the day and at least sultry upper-70s at night.

Finally: If you missed it yesterday, we got to have a conversation with Harris County Judge Lina Hidalgo about hurricanes and flooding, and we published a post around that. Flooding remains one of our region’s greatest challenges, and we hope to be able to share more perspectives on managing it in the future.

  1. I’ll be glad when August gets here. It may be hotter, but at least the end will be in sight.

  2. We are having a lot of days with unhealthy air quality. Can you say something about that in your forecasts?

    • Yup! Today should be the worst of it, but we will make note of it tomorrow morning too.
