Warmer for a couple of days before a bit of a cool down for Houston

Good morning. It’s uncharacteristically warm for early January, but it appears that after Tuesday we’ll return to more seasonable weather for the mid-January period with highs generally in the 60s, and lows in the 40s or 50s. Rain chances return Friday, but there’s nothing too extreme in the forecast at all over at least the next week or 10 days. Also, if you’re interested in the Houston Marathon (which will take place on January 20), we’ll have our debut forecast later today.

Monday

High temperatures on Sunday reached the low 70s for most of the region, and they should again be that warm today, with slight southerly winds. Skies will be mostly cloudy, which should help put an upper limit on temperatures. As cloudy skies continue into tonight, we probably will only see lows down in the low 60s for most of Houston once again, and with the warmer air we could see some fog on Tuesday morning.

Tuesday

This will be another warm day, with highs under mostly cloudy skies likely reaching the low- to mid-70s. These warm and humid conditions will continue until later in the day, or early evening, as a cold front slides through Houston. Right now the dynamics with this front don’t appear to produce a significant chance of rain—maybe 10 or 20 percent for the region. Lows Tuesday night should generally fall into the 50s.

Wednesday and Thursday

In the wake of the front, high pressure should yield a pair of nice, sunny, winter-like days for Houston with highs ranging from 60 to 65 degrees, and lows ranging from 45 to 50 degrees. This should be fine weather.

Friday, Saturday, and Sunday

Our next real chance of rain should come toward the end of the week, as the onshore flow ramps back up later on Thursday and Friday. Friday should be a partly to mostly cloudy day as a result, with highs in the 60s. Rain chances should increase later in the day as a storm system approaches, and run through the night. It’s difficult to have too much confidence in accumulations right now, but most areas will probably see between 0.5 and 1.0 inch of rain through Saturday morning. We’ll refine this forecast as the week moves along.

The remainder of Saturday looks to be a gray, cooler day with a high of around 60 degrees as a front moves in. Sunday should be the pick of the litter, with partly to mostly sunny skies, and again, a high of around 60 degrees.

  1. Yuck. Stop stealing my winter! We get warm crap for 9-10 months. Can’t we have just a month or two of uninterrupted cold?

  2. This weather changes are so confusing! My dear Fulgencio continually puts the wrong clothes on in the morning and I have to tell him he will be too cold or too warm. Although the weekend was fun and created memories we hope to wear our new sweaters soon. Happy day to all!

  3. Please start telling me about the marathon weather. This is the phase of my training where I must spend as much time as possible obsessing over things I have no control over.

  4. Guess Lee must have absolutely loved the winter of 2009-2010.
Almost uninterrupted cold from December through February.
