Excessive heat today before a pattern change returns us to summer lite conditions

In brief: Just a short update this morning due to the Memorial Day holiday, but it’s warranted due to the extreme heat over inland parts of the metro area. After today we’ll see somewhat cooler weather and a return of some modest rain chances later this week.

Monday

Today will be sunny and hot, with much of the area seeing high temperatures in the mid- to upper-90s. This will be the region’s hottest weather since late September of last year, and it will feel sweltering outside. Please take heat precautions if you are outdoors from the late morning to late afternoon hours. There is a slight chance of showers, and possibly a few thunderstorms, during the overnight hours as a boundary slides toward the Houston region. However the most likely scenario is that a capping inversion remains solidly in place, preventing the development of any storms. Lows tonight will be around 80 degrees.

Today will be very warm across the Houston metro area. (National Weather Service)

Tuesday

A partly to mostly sunny day with highs in the low-90s. Tuesday evening into Wednesday morning will see another chance for some storms, but once again they’ll be battling against a capping inversion. I’d peg the chance of showers and thunderstorms Tuesday night at about 20 percent, but we’ll need to fine tune this in tomorrow’s forecast.

Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday

These will be partly sunny days with highs in the upper 80s to 90 degrees. Each of these days will see a decent chance of rain, perhaps on the order of 40 percent or so, in the absence of high pressure. However, I don’t have a great handle on the details or the timing. Showers will be most likely along and north of Interstate 10, where accumulations of 1 inch or more are possible.

Saturday and Sunday

Rain chances will linger into the weekend, with highs likely in the upper 80s to 90 degrees. At this point both days should see at least partly sunny skies, with Sunday having the greater chance of being mostly rain free.

Have a great holiday!

    • Or a day booking travel to cooler climates for a break from the “hot and humid” monotony.

  1. Good luck to all the teams playing in the baseball Super NIT today. Stay hydrated!

  2. I saw on the Eyewall that you thought that the hurricanes this year will be more like last year, than like 2020 in terms of tracks. Do you mean you think they will tend to recurve back out to open water? (Hope youre right)

Is there something in particular that makes you think that? Thanks

  3. You know it’s getting bad when we have excessive heat warnings in late May. This is a true sign of the times.

    • Visiting Houston this weekend reminds me why iI am so happy we moved to Madison last year. Houston has its great points but we don’t miss the oppressive heat. Even in the winter, I feel like we’ve moved to paradise being in Wisconsin. We keep trying to get our friends here to follow us!

        • There are some cold days for sure but you go for brisk walks, duck into a coffee shop and go home and light a fire. A couple weekends to warm weather destinations help… January and February are the worst but we actually enjoyed the cold and snow for the holidays. It’s a trade off we’re happy with!

          • While there are many pros to living in Wisconsin, there are also some cons. One of the biggest cons is the cold, snowy winters.
One thing to know about winter in Wisconsin is that it can get very cold, with average
            temperatures in January around 8°-27°F.
Wisconsin can also get quite a bit of snow, with cities like Madison averaging around 53 inches of snow per year. Winter in Wisconsin can also mean snowstorms, icy roads, and frigid temperatures.

      • Four seasons of outdoor fun and discovery–my home state. Explore all the geography and topography.

        • I am shocked that you left – don’t you miss it and want to return? We didn’t grow up there but regret not moving a long time ago. We love Wisconsin- there is a reason so many places in that state are ranked as best places to live!

  4. Current heat index in Angleton is 113. Air temp is 92 with a dew point of 81. This has never happened in May before in my area. What the hell are we in for later this summer? I don’t even want to know

    • Heat index of 118 at the PWS in my subdivision in Clear Lake . Dew point is 84F !!!

What is the airfare to Antarctica now?

      • No lie! sign me up at this point lol. Btw the heat index maxed out at 116 at my location. It actually feels worse outside now than it did last August 27th when the air temp hit 107 because the dew points were in the low 60s that day. It’s amazing the difference extra water vapor can make it feel to our bodies.

        • For survival purposes you want a dry heat. Not this 80+degree Dewpoints. Makes it deadly. Want dewpoint temps down

  5. In the past, northern states were referred to as the rust belt, being icy cold and dreary during winters with a subsequent mass exodus to the sun belt, but now, those states are beginning to look more attractive as the southern states fry for eight months of the year.
It could be more bearable down here if Houston wasn’t such a sh*t hole and if the ‘leaders’ paid more attention to the environment and maintaining grassy open spaces than sucking up to developers and the petrochemical industry.

  6. Only place I ever lived where the barometer says it should be raining but it can’t because of constant warm air inversion. And topping it off they’re burning sugar cane or some such fields and trapping all the smoke under it. Looking forward to counting up those 100s in July.

    • Yeah, if we don’t see some sort of pattern change to lower pressure soon, then it is going to get very ugly this summer. We are already starting off way worse than we were last year at this point. We actually had a pretty mild start to last summer with highs mostly in the mid to upper 80s and lows in the 60s until mid-June. It is very concerning we are already seeing this brutal heat and humidity this early in the season.

      • I’m hopeful. This humidity is partly from a warm Gulf, which may mean more tropical rain and cooler temps during what would usually be high summer.

        • I’m hopeful as well, that we’ll see summer weather more like what we had in 2021. Almost daily afternoon thundershowers and lower temps, it reminded me of summertime when I was a kid.

  7. This new wave of rain is going to bring the mosquitoes back, which will make doing anything outside unbearable again. I am so exhausted with the heat, and the rain, and the ever looming threat of a hurricane on an already unstable grid. I just have to get through one more summer and then I am out of here.

  8. It’s amazing and I’m in AWE of the people who moved here and still moving here. Gonna be one of the biggest mistakes you’ve ever made. Didn’t do your research. And I’ll be glad when people start moving out. Take these businesses and all your money out of here. Things were better way before this incoming exodus anyway

  9. Space boys – there’s a white speck by the morning moon visible right now 6:38am in the blue sky. Naked eye visible. It’s not moving. Looks like a star. But it’s daylight. Any idea what that is? I’d attach photo but doesn’t look like option
