Houston emerges from a freeze, more typical winter-like weather ahead

The northern half of Houston is seeing freezing conditions again this morning, but temperatures will soon warm up today. For the first time in 2018, the region should see highs reach the 50 degree mark—still about 15 degrees below normal for this time of year. The warming trend will continue through the weekend before a moderately strong cool front arrives.

Thursday and Friday

Amazingly, the warming trend doesn’t mean we’re entirely out of the woods for some frozen precipitation. Thursday will see mostly sunny skies, and a cool but pleasant day. Overnight lows should fall into the mid- to upper-30s tonight, and a weak atmospheric disturbance could bring some clouds tonight and early Friday morning, and with this some very spotty sleet or cold rain is possible to the west and southwest of Houston.

Houston will see one more really cold night on Thursday night. (National Weather Service)

However, since the ground will remain above freezing we don’t anticipate any effects and, indeed, I don’t think most people will see anything. Friday itself should be a great day, with sunny skies and highs in the mid-50s.

Saturday

Saturday looks to be a wonderful day for outdoor activities, with high temperatures in the low 60s and partly sunny skies.

Sunday

Dare I say it? Nearly balmy weather returns to Houston on Sunday ahead of a cool front, with high temperatures climbing to about 70 degrees under mostly cloudy skies. Later in the day I expect we’ll see some scattered, light showers ahead of, or along with a cold front that should move through Houston on Sunday evening. Accumulations should be nothing to write home about, with a few tenths of an inch of rain falling over parts of the area.

Next week

The first half of next week appears likely to bring typical winter weather to Houston, with highs in the 60s, lows in the 40s, and mostly sunny skies. After the chilly start to 2018, I suspect this will feel “warm” to most people.

  1. Hopefully weeds in my yard will go away! Lol! Remember put fresh water out for birds! My water frozen this a.m.!😂

  2. Wow! You mean it hasn’t been above 50 ALL YEAR here in Houston??? That’s quite a long while! But I remember it being around 100 back in August which wasn’t so long ago, either.

    Must be that global cooling…..

  3. I know you kid, but I don’t get people who deny climate change. Climate change IS real, whether we attribute to it or not; however, I feel that with our careless ways, we are speeding up the process. Pollution has an effect on people. Why is it so hard to believe that it has an effect on our environment too? Even people honestly believe that climate change does not exist, what harm does it do for people to act like it does?

  4. Never thought I would say this having moved here in 1966..I’ll take the heat and humidity over this cold stuff…at 74 years of age thank goodness for turtleneck sweaters! Those of you that don’t appreciate that….you will!
