Sunny, cool and dry weather likely for most of the next week

It’s cold this morning, with lows generally in the upper 30s, under clear skies. This is how we’re going to be for awhile.

TODAY

As high pressure reigns over head, temperatures will only climb into the upper 50s. Tonight will be very cold, but I expect lows in metro Houston to remain just above freezing. Parts of Montgomery County and other areas to the north and northeast may see a light freeze.

FRIDAY

Mostly sunny, with a high near 60 degrees. Some clouds and a southerly flow will return Friday evening. This could allow a few scattered showers to develop Friday night and Saturday morning. But I wouldn’t expect much rain.

Winter’s back, and it’s staying for the next week

Lows are generally in the upper 40s this morning across Houston, and this is going to be one of our warmest mornings for awhile.

TODAY-THURSDAY-FRIDAY

With a cold front comfortably offshore we’re going to see three days of mostly sunny skies, highs around 60 degrees, and lows in the 30s. Friday will likely be the coldest of the mornings, with temperatures remaining just above freezing in the metro area. However we’re going to have to watch this freeze line to see if it creeps south into Houston. Freezes are definitely possible in Montgomery County and places to the north and north east.

After today, turning winter-like in Houston for the next week

It’s quite warm for early February this morning, not to mention muggy, with temperatures in the upper 60s across Houston and relative humidities near 90 percent. But that’s about to change…

TODAY

By late morning northwest winds should arrive, bringing dry air into the region. Under sunny skies highs today will rise into the low 70s, but temperatures will fall pretty quickly after sunset this evening. Wednesday morning’s low should be in the low 40s.

After a warm weekend, is winter over? No.

Parts of Houston reached 80 degrees on Sunday, and we’re going to have another similarly warm day today. That raises the question: Is winter over?

The short answer is no. A fairly strong cold front will arrive this week on Tuesday, and next week has the potential to be even colder. The forecast models suggest we will see an Arctic outbreak in the upper Midwest, and there’s the possibility some of that very cold air may reach down into the Houston area by around Wednesday, Feb. 10. Obviously there are no guarantees so far out, but at this point next week does look quite cold.
