Season’s first freeze possible for northern Houston on Monday

Temperatures dipped into the upper 30s across most of Houston on Sunday morning, and Monday morning will be a few degrees cooler. But will the region finally see its first freeze?

It’s going to be close, and the answer likely depends upon high clouds, which are difficult to predict. The freezing line will probably fall somewhere north of Interstate 10, likely near Bush Intercontinental Airport. Some of the best model guidance predicts temperatures between 32 and 34 degrees at this location on Monday morning. For areas further north there should be little question about seeing freezing temperatures for a few hours on Monday.

For the rest of today we’ll see cold weather as chilly air continues to blow in from the north. I expect most areas will struggle to reach 50 degrees under sunny skies. We’ll remain sunny through Tuesday, with daytime highs only creeping up to around 60 degrees, but the only chance of a freeze will come Monday morning.

We’ll be warmer during the Wednesday through Friday period — think highs in the 60s, lows around 50 — as more moist air returns along with clouds and pretty decent rain chances (although probably not the stormy weather we experienced Friday night). The next cold front probably arrives sometime on next Saturday, and I’ll have more about conditions for the Houston marathon on Sunday in a post later this afternoon.
