Houston saw some scattered light snow and sleet on Tuesday evening, but drier air at low levels of the atmosphere prevented more widespread coverage. After this system moved out of the area, skies began to clear from west to east across the region after midnight and this allowed for very cold temperatures to settle into southeast Texas. As of 6:30am CT, lows range from about 20 degrees in College Station, to 25 in the city of Houston, to 30 degrees in Galveston. Up north, this is nothing. But for Houston, this is very cold—with many sites tying or breaking record low temperatures for January 3. If you’re tired of this, there’s good news. We’ve seen the worst of it now.
Wednesday through Friday
One big thing happens today: full sunshine returns to Houston. It’s been awhile. But the next three days should see nearly continuous sunshine during the daytime hours. This will allow for a sloooow warming trend, from highs today in the low 40s to the low 50s by Friday. Overnight lows, too, should climb from around 30 degrees Wednesday night to about 40 degrees by Friday night.
Saturday and Sunday
The onshore flow finally resumes by Friday or Friday night, and that will allow for us to experience considerably warmer temperatures for the weekend. Some clouds should begin to return on Saturday, as high temperatures reach about 60 degrees. Sunday should be warmer still—with a high of around 70 degrees and rising humidity levels. Scattered, light rain showers are possible from Saturday night through Monday, but we don’t anticipate anything too heavy.
Next week
A moderate cool front next Monday, or so, will bring typical wintertime weather to Houston for most of the rest of next week, with temperatures perhaps a few degrees above normal. Forecast models suggest we’ll see high temperatures in the 60s, for the most part, with overnight lows in the 40s and 50s. Rain chances probably go away for a few days after the front’s passage Monday.
Later this morning we’ll have a special announcement about our sponsor for 2018, and I’ll be back this afternoon with a detailed look at the forecast for the 2018 Houston Marathon.
Hooray! I’m ready to say goodbye to this freezing weather!
Before you say that, remember July! Remember August! Remember horrific humidity! And be thankful for some cold. 🙂
Amen!
Seeing as how it is winter, I absolutely adore this weather! In Houston we don’t get to experience the various seasons very often and it is the only thing that makes this native Houstonian sad about our amazing city. That being said, I could not be happier about some “real” winter weather and pray that we get a bit more and stay cool/cold through the winter season!!! I often hear complaints all summer long from others about the heat but then they complain about the cold. I will never understand that! lol
Thank you for all the weather updates!! You guys are my number one trusted source!
Yay! I love cold weather, but temps in the 20s are too cold – I hate worrying about the pipes in my old house!
Ditto!
Ready for our version of winter to be over! Thankfully it doesn’t stay this cold for more than a day or two.
One benefit of this “Cold Weather” (it’s all relative, given -20 F in the far north) is the mosquitoes (and similar creatures) are dead! For a while at least. When it warms up, we can remove all the plant covers without swarms of mosquitoes attacking.
I migrated here for this?
Be glad you’re not on the East Coast, anywhere from Georgia to Maine! A massive snowfall is forecast in that region as a big low pressure system moves north into the already frigid temperatures.
We don’t have to “shovel winter” in this area! Just bat at millions of mosquitoes.
Why did we have sleet…..Where was there a warm level to prevent the snow from falling all the way to the ground???
That’s enough of a taste of winter! I guess we can safely de-cloak our outdoor plants tomorrow for sun, right?
Hallelujah!
It’s not often I get to pull out the silk long johns from the back of the closet but always happy to do it! Like many of us in Houston, I’m not from here and have lived in severely cold climates. Pleased to be in warm Houston but also happy to experience a taste of winter. Thank you for walking with us in all sorts of weather. My friends in Canada and California still refer to your site for updates on “my” weather and wish they had an “Eric and Matt” of their own!
Thanks again guys!
What a bunch a wihiners. Thank God for some cold as even Houston is supposed to have some winter, not stinking 80 degree mess like last years Chtistmas. I say bring it on
What a bunch a wihiners. Thank God for some cold as even Houston is supposed to have some winter, not stinking 80 degree mess like last years Chtistmas. Heck yeah!
