Houston to experience amazing fall weather for awhile

Two of my very favorite words in Houston weather are “reinforcing front.” Often, during fall, we will see a cold front move into the region, push into the Gulf of Mexico, and then return onshore a couple of days later as a warm front. But when additional shots of cooler and drier air reinforce the initial front, we can get a run of cool, mostly dry weather for a week or longer. And that’s just what we have ahead of us now.

Monday

It’s a chilly morning up north, with lows in the mid-40s for inland areas near Conroe and The Woodlands, and about 10 degrees warmer in the city of Houston and closer to the coast. With dry air and sunny skies, highs today should warm to about 80 degrees. But wait, there’s more! A reinforcing shot of cooler, drier air should move into Houston tonight.

Tuesday and Wednesday

With the additional, cooler air we should see some splendid fall weather both days, with highs probably around 70 degrees, give or take, beneath sunny skies. Overnight lows will range from the 40s inland to upper 50s closer to the coast. If you’ve been waiting for truly fall like weather, it has arrived.

Thursday

At some point later on Wednesday, or Thursday morning, we’ll see a brief return of onshore moisture. This will result in slightly warmer, and still mostly sunny, conditions on Thursday with a high near 80 degrees. Overnight lows will be a bit warmer, too, but most of the region should still slip at least into the upper 50s.

Friday

But wait, there’s more! Even as temperatures begin to warm Thursday afternoon, another front should move through the region on Friday, probably during the morning hours. Moisture levels will be fairly low in the atmosphere, but we can’t rule out a few showers along the front, or after it’s passage. But for now we’d bet against rainfall. Highs probably will reach about 70 degrees, or perhaps a bit warmer along the coast.

Saturday and Sunday

Are you ready for a cold weekend? Because you’re going to get a cold, mostly sunny weekend. Highs Saturday will likely remain in the 60s, and only reach about 70 degrees on Sunday. Overnight lows for Saturday and Sunday mornings are still a bit difficult to pin down, but they have a chance to be quite cold (about 40 degrees) for areas well inland, and upper 40s for most of the Houston metro area. We’ll see.

  1. So with that reinforcing cold front for the weekend, what would you place the odds at for the roof being open at Minute Maid Park for games 3-5 of the World Series?

  2. This is great news, Eric/Matt. Cooler days ahead. Out of curiosity, I see a disturbance on NHC north of Sout America that looks like it’s potentially going to be in the mouth of the gulf. I know it’s too early to tell, but do you have any info on this disturbance?

  3. I’m loving this weather, but my allergies do not. Always have to have a negative with the positive. But I can deal with the negative over extreme heat anytime!

  4. Thank you, both, for this wonderful forecast. Maybe this is our reward for enduring such a crazy hurricane season!!! May all of us who melt during the summer months and come alive when the temps dip into the 60s, rejoice in this beautiful weather. Thanks again.

  5. Me too , I am curious..I am wondering if NHC made a typo on todays tropical outlook on their website ..I read an article on the weather channel stating that the system will be moving north to northeast..However the NHC Atlantic tropical outlook for today states that this system is moving north to northwest…I’m confused, lol..

  6. Yay, we can’t wait, cooler weather makes life so much better.

Thank you for you diligence in reporting the weather accurately, we all appreciate both of you!

    • It’s not totally Fall without hockey, but thanks to Le$, that’s no longer an option here in Houston 😩

  7. Hi,

I know you mentioned it would be a chilly weekend (and we are SO excited), at this point is there any way that you can tell the temps on Halloween? 🙂

    Thanks!

  8. I’m just curious, and while I am not sure if this falls within your realm of expertise, I will ask anyway.

…How cold does it have to be to send the bugs to the bottomless pits of H*ll from whence they sprang? This should happen soon, I hope?
