Warmer, and a bit wetter, before a cooler weekend

Temperatures are quite a bit warmer this morning — falling only to around 50 degrees — and this warming trend will continue through Friday afternoon before another cold front.

TODAY

As we warm into the low- to mid-60s today, and atmospheric moisture levels increase, there will be some scattered showers and possibly a few thunderstorms develop across Houston later today. Chances are best between the city and the coast. Not expecting any kind of washout, with a few tenths of an inch of rain at most.

FRIDAY

Drier air will move in behind the rain, and it won’t bring very cold air initially. This, along with sunshine, will allow highs on Friday to warm to about 70 degrees. Houston hasn’t had a 70 degree day since two days after Christmas, so for many a bit of warmth may be welcome.

SATURDAY

The drier air moving into Houston will turn colder Friday night, and another atmospheric disturbance on Saturday will bring another chance of scattered rain during the afternoon and evening hours. Models show rain developing most likely on the eastern half of Houston, and we could see some decent winds with a strong pressure gradient. Again I’m not expecting more than a few tenths of an inch of rain for areas that do see precipitation.

SUNDAY

The cooler air mass should settle down by early Sunday morning, with lows in the upper 30s to low 40s across the Houston area, and clearing skies. Winds should be around 10 mph in the morning, warming into the mid-50s.

Houston, by Sunday and Monday, will be on the southern edge of a very cold air mass over the central United States. (Weather Bell)

NEXT WEEK

Monday and Tuesday morning should be clear and cool, but we’ll see a modest warming trend heading into the middle of the week.

  1. Do you see any possibility of an actual freeze for this year? Or have we peaked as far as our winter goes this year?

    • Good question. Parts of northern Houston have froze, but central Houston hasn’t. Climate-wise, we have about six more weeks when we can reasonably expect a freeze, but I don’t anticipate seeing one in the next two weeks.
