A spectacular mid-week for Houston, but storms may return Friday

Well, that was certainly a chilly weekend for April, with cold, gray conditions for most of Saturday and Sunday—but at least the rain ended early on Saturday for most. It appears as though next weekend will be cooler as well, but we should have lots of sunshine instead of mostly sunny skies.

Monday

Like on Sunday, we won’t see much in the way of sunshine today, and there’s enough moisture in the atmosphere for some drizzle and perhaps even light rain. Highs today will be around 70 degrees. A fairly weak cold front will slide through Houston this evening, but I think at most we can probably only expect some light rain with this passage—nothing at all severe. Any rain should end during the overnight hours, and with clearing skies, low temperatures should fall into the 50s for most of the region.

Tuesday morning will be cool in Houston, but not nearly so cool as the upper Midwest. (Pivotal Weather)

Tuesday and Wednesday

Monday evening’s front, and another push of cooler air on Tuesday, should bring the region some great mid-week weather. I’m looking for two sunny days, with highs in the upper 70s, and overnight lows in the 50s and low 60s. These days should also produce some great sunsets.

Thursday

Warmer, as the onshore flow reestablishes itself, with highs in the low 80s. Skies should still be mostly sunny, but humidity levels will be moving up, and overnight lows probably will only fall to around 70 degrees.

Friday through Saturday morning

On Thursday and Friday the onshore flow will begin ramping up, which will pump significant moisture into the region. Meanwhile, a large, upper-level low pressure system spinning away from the Rocky Mountains will bring a chance of rain and potentially storms to the region beginning on Friday, and lasting through about Saturday morning. Details are sketchy, but along with highs of around 80 and mostly cloudy skies on Friday, I think it’s reasonable to expect the possibility of showers and scattered thunderstorms (some could be severe, we’ll see). Right now rainfall accumulations for most look to be about 1 inch, or less, but I don’t have high confidence in that. By late Friday or Saturday morning, a quite strong cold front should move through Houston.

Saturday afternoon and Sunday

The rest of the weekend looks pretty nice. I think Saturday will be breezy, with clearing skies and highs of around 70 degrees, and a cold night in the 40s for much of Houston. Sunday may only get into the mid-60s, under sunny skies. This is rare for April, but with summer just around the corner I am certainly not going to complain.

  1. It drizzled on us the entire time we were at Tall Ships 2018 on the island. Cold too. All of the forecasts earlier had eluded to Sunday being dry and 73° with afternoon sun. That was a negative. Lol. I also thought this week was supposedly dry. Until I get up this morning to rain and a completely different 7 day forecast on my phone. Sometimes I wonder if these weather apps are even manned by humans.

    • You must be new here.. This is the best site for Houston weather, bar none. Keep up the great work Eric!

  2. Can you adjust Saturday to make sure we’re ok for the art car parade?! Dance-for-no-rain! Dance-for-no-rain! Dance-for-no-rain! Oh please please!!

Clarification, please? Don’t have confidence we will get even 1″ or that we will be getting much more than 1″?

    Thank you.

  4. What I’m wondering is why it didn’t clear up and get warm for the Astros game Sunday like the giggly woman on Fox 26 said it would on the 6 AM news.

    Baseball in football weather.
