Good morning. A line of showers and thunderstorms is moving through Houston this morning from west to east, and this should be the last rain before an exceptionally sunny week. Seriously, we should see a stretch of at least six sunny and mostly cool days—lovely late winter and early spring weather.
Before jumping too far into the forecast, however, I wanted to answer a question from a reader that I think others might find of interest. Lee Sharp writes to say that he and longtime girlfriend Aida Gonzalez are ready to tie the knot:
“We have this amazing backyard, and really want an outdoor reception. But Houston weather being what it is, and the advance lead times needed for a weeding… So, when is the best time of year for an outdoor event? Not being rained out is first priority, but also not having everyone die of heatstroke is important as well. So what do you think?”
The easy answer is not summer! So we can rule out the period of June through September due to heat and humidity. I’m going to take away December through February too, because while it doesn’t necessarily get all that cold in Houston, it can get quite chilly and blustery during the winter months. This leaves us with March, April, May, and October and November. Of those five months, March (3.20 inches) and April (3.25 inches) have historically the lowest annual rainfall totals—more than one inch below the other contending months. Late March actually has the lowest daily chance of precipitation of any time of year, 21 percent, compared to 40 percent in mid-June. The chance of rain is even lower during the evening hours, falling below 4 percent. Finally, April and May are subject to spring storms, and October and November are subject to stronger storms and tornadoes as well.
All of this leaves the obvious conclusion that March is the “safest” month to plan an outdoor wedding in Houston, although there really is no “safe” time. It is historically the driest month, with a generally mild climate (average high 72.4 degrees), and if you’re having a backyard wedding I imagine flowers and gardens and trees are starting to bloom nicely later in the month. So to pin things down even further, the best time for outdoor weddings in Houston is the last two weeks of March, during the afternoon or evening hours.
Monday
A line of showers and thunderstorms should move southeast across the area and offshore by around noon today. Most parts of Houston will see less than one-half inch of rain but a few stronger storms could generate isolated areas of 1 inch of rainfall or more. High temperatures today will reach the mid-70s under mostly cloudy skies. A weak cool front will sag into the area this evening, helping to drop temperatures to around 50 degrees Monday night under mostly cloudy skies.
Tuesday
With clearing skies, high temperatures will reach around 70 degrees with lots of sunshine. A stronger front arrives Tuesday evening in the region. At this point there does not appear to be enough moisture to work with to produce any additional rainfall with the reinforcing front. Lows Tuesday night should get into the mid-40s.
Wednesday and Thursday
Clear and cool will be the watchwords for these days, with highs likely topping out in the 50s on both days with ample sunshine. Wednesday night looks like the coldest of the week, with lows bottoming out near freezing on Thursday morning in Houston, and at or below freezing outside of the city. If you’re heading out to the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo BBQ Cook-Off this year, temperatures on Thursday evening will probably be in the upper-40s—so chilly but without strong winds or rain to worry about.
Friday and Saturday
A winds swing around to come back onshore, we may see a few more clouds, but both of these days will still probably be mostly sunny, with high temperatures reaching about 70 degrees, and lows in the mid-40s on Friday night, and around 50 on Saturday night. In short, these should be pleasant, spring-like days.
Sunday and beyond
Sunday will probably see a mix of clouds and sunshine as the onshore flow gets a bit more pronounced, and our weather will probably turn partly to mostly cloudy to start next week. Better rain chances will return on Monday or Tuesday ahead of the region’s next front.
I have to take a work from home day this week, which do you think is best, Wed or Thur? I was thinking Wed but now it seems that Thur will be the coldest of the 2. I’d rather stay home on the coldest day vs driving in. Thanks
Wednesday will be cooler during the afternoon. Thursday will start out colder by a few degrees, but likely warm up more during the afternoon.
I love your Wedding forecast. I only wish I’d known that 15 years ago. I definitely concur with “Not June”, all I had were people complaining to me about the heat while I’m wearing 40 pounds of dress!
Never plan a wedding in San Antonio the first weekend in August. One of my Granddaughter’s did this. Outside, no shade – we all walked down the aisle with a water bottle in one hand and a fan in the other. Ceemony was 12 min.-then we all fell into the a/ced reception hall. Then outside to take pix where the wind picked up and all our hair standing on end. Miserable but the marriage is super successful.
Interesting about best time of year for outdoor wedding. What about pollen though? In March would all the guests be covered in yellow pollen from the trees? And sneezing!
Got married in Katy in early Feb. Outdoor ceremony under partly cloudy skies with a high in the mid 70s.
The weekend after our wedding a snowstorm hit the Midwest and closed multiple airports where most of my husband’s family would have been coming from. It’s not only our weather you have to worry about, if you’ve got guests coming from out of town!
But anything can happen in Houston, so have a tent rental on standby, just in case.
Great information. I planned outdoor picnics for a big group for years. We planned six months out for two picnics a year. I found lots of competition for late March/April and October dates in our Houston area parks. Good to schedule in advance for your best weather days, and a backup day for rain, when possible.
We had an outdoor wedding for my daughter mid October, 2012, at 5pm. It was a beautiful day. A tad warm the first part of the ceremony; however, the closer it got to sunset, the more comfortable it became. It made for beautiful pictures!
I’m going to make a prediction that this will be the last time we see freezing temperatures this season. The next time we freeze may very well be after the election, Thanksgiving, and nearing Christmas.
My baby’s 1st birthday party is this Saturday. Thanks for whipping up a perfect day for us!
It’s so great (and so funny) the full service this weather blog provides! I will say last year friends in Austin planned a “bluebonnet peeping tour” for us to drive around and look at wildflowers in Central Texas. First weekend of April. Cold, windy, cloudy. The next weekend? Beautiful. Late March is probably the best bet, but like someone else said, have a rental available just in case.
