Severe storms possible in Houston this morning, heavy rain through mid-week

An area of severe thunderstorms has affected the Houston region this morning from about El Campo to Katy. This cluster of storms is now moving toward the northeast, and closer to the central and northern Houston area. There is enough rotation in these storms to potentially produce a tornado or two and a warning is in effect for the Jersey Village area through 7:45am.

Today

Storms will remain possible in Houston area today as a general line of showers and thunderstorms moves east, with severe weather most likely along and north of Interstate 10. Some areas could see 1 to 3 inches of rain from these slow moving storms.

Area of flood advisory in effect until 8am CT. (National Weather Service)

Given the storm system’s current movement, it should move out of the region by around 11 am or Noon CT. If you’re heading out to an MLK Parade this morning, please take an umbrella, and be prepared to take shelter if you hear thunder. There will probably be a break in the storms this afternoon and early evening before chances for light to moderate rain return this evening and during the overnight hours.

Houston’s wobbly warm winter continues

This winter has been one warm but wobbly roller coaster ride. We’ve had both the coldest weather in a few years and the most persistent warm weather in a number of years. In fact, Wednesday and Thursday represent the first time since 2002 and only the 16th time on record that Houston has officially recorded two consecutive days of 80° or warmer in January. We’ve hit 80° a lot of times in January, but usually not for more than a day. After last weekend’s cold and now with this warm weather, some are probably wondering if winter is over. Doubtful. Read on.

Today and Saturday

We have a few showers around this morning, especially north of Houston.

Radar as of 6:30 AM shows scattered showers lifting north of Houston. (GRLevel3)

As the day goes on, don’t be shocked if you see a shower or sprinkle or two around in your travels.

We will continue with a very warm pattern the next few days. Though it probably won’t hit 80 again today and tomorrow, it will come close. We’ll see mid to upper 70s today and mid 70s tomorrow. Both days will feature partly to mostly cloudy skies. The slight chance of a stray shower or some sprinkles continues Saturday also. I do expect ongoing fog near the coast to be pretty persistent through the period.

For the Texans up in Foxborough on Saturday evening, weather shouldn’t be a huge factor, though it will be quite cold. Kickoff temps will be in the mid 20s, falling into the low 20s. Winds should thankfully be light.

Warmer, muggy weather to persist through the weekend for Houston

Some coastal areas are seeing fog this morning as warmer air moves over the cooler Gulf waters. Such a pattern could continue during the morning hours through Monday. For the rest of the region, it will just be anomalously warm.

Today

Skies should be partly to mostly sunny today, allowing high temperatures to climb to about 80 degrees. There is only a slight chance of showers this afternoon.

Friday and Saturday

Although a very strong cold front is moving into west Texas this morning, its effects are unlikely to reach all the way to the Houston area after it stalls tonight (College Station might see some cooler air). Therefore Houston is likely to see a couple of partly to mostly cloudy days on Friday and Saturday, with highs in the mid-70s, and warm nights. Some light rain showers are possible.
