Site Update: Space City Weather seeks a sponsor, and more

It’s been quite a week for Space City Weather, which Matt and I have now been publishing for nearly six months. Without any advertising we’ve grown to more than 100,000 monthly page views, have nearly 21,000 “likes” on Facebook, and are continuing to see significant growth. This is due entirely to word of mouth from readers who share the site on Facebook, spread the word on Twitter and submit posts and upvote on reddit. We deeply appreciate this support.

To really cover weather in the greater Houston area the right way, the site requires a lot of work, especially when active weather occurs (I worked about 18 hours on Monday, for example). Matt and I are developing plans for even more coverage, especially with hurricane season looming. At the same time, because this is essentially a hobby that takes time away from our families, Matt and I need to find a way to compensate for our time and server expenses. We have no intention of charging users to access the site—our foremost purpose is to provide a service, and making blocking access goes entirely against this—but we do think the site has value to a sponsor. We believe readers value the site, and would value the sponsor bringing it to them.

So we are seeking a monthly sponsor. For more details, go here.

We also will continue to appreciate you sharing the site on social media, and telling friends and family about us. I’d also like to remind you that, given Facebook’s algorithms, the surest way to not miss a new report on Space City Weather is to enter your e-mail in the “subscribe via e-mail” box on the right-hand side of this page. You only get e-mails when we make new posts. That’s it.

So thank you for all your support, and here’s to better weather ahead!

  1. What about also accepting donations via PayPal or some other payment method? I know I would be happy to donate!

    • We’ve had a number of readers saying they would support the site on a monthly basis through subscriptions or donations. This is awesome! If the sole-sponsor model doesn’t work out, we may turn to that kind of approach. But for now I want to see if there’s a sponsor who sees value in bringing SCW to readers ad-free.

  2. Unfortunately, I don’t have a business case for sponsoring this site much as I’d like to. However, if you put together a survey to get some further details on your readers with which you might better entice a sponsor, I’d be happy to take it.

  3. Thank you so much for this site, Eric and Matt! Being new to Houston and having lived many places, I’ve never seen the weather done with such intelligence, tact, and passion. I’m hooked, and I share this site with everyone I know, usually beginning the sentence with “My weather guy has this blog…” Best wishes and cheers for its future!

  4. Have you considered using Patreon.com? With all of the followers on Facebook and Twitter I think you can generate more than your target $1,000 per month. I would subscribe for at least $5.00 per month.

  5. I’ll definitely subscribe!! You are my “go to guy” for the weather EVERY day!! Especially during major weather events! In fact, I share your updates on my face book page, and my friends share my post! Your blogs go all over the world because of all of us!! You are world-famous!! LOL LOL

I check the major stations for weather, but when I want the “real” deal, I always check Space City Weather!

  6. What a coincidence. I was just talking with a friend about this site and commented that there doesn’t seem to be any revenue being generated by it. He was surprised as well. It’s quite popular. Good luck getting a sponsor and/or getting donations. This site is better than any of the other local sources. Appreciate it greatly!

  7. Thank you Matt & Eric for being the BEST place for weather news! You guys are spot on and keep us up-to-date 24/7! I recommend to everyone I know!!
